The History of

Dixon's

Our story started in 1941 when Virgil Ray (V.R.) Stuart, Lyna Dixon's father founded Stuart Hardware.

A New Business

From the local paper: "It gives me a great deal of pleasure this week to announce that I have purchased the stock of the Kingman Hardware from M.E. Garrison, trustee for the creditors with the deal becoming effective Monday of this week."

The paper continues, "Mr. Stuart is well known in the country having come to Kingman in 1918 from Englewood. Upon his arrival here he was with the Golden Rule Oil Company for a year and a half and following this was with the Graber Hardware until 1937 when he became associated with Kingman Hardware."

"Mr. Stuart is regarded as a most oustanding electrician and he will continue the electrical wiring business which he built up at the Kingman Hardware...His many friends in Kingman and over the county wish him every success in his new venture."

Locations and Owners

The business expanded into HVAC and plumbing, and also operated from several locations on Main Street, including 123 Main, 238 N Main, and it's present location, 325 N Main.

Owners stayed in the family, from VR. until 1962, Gloyd Dixon until 1991 (changing the name to Dixon's Hardware in 1962), and Lance Dixon, from 1991 to present.

Excitement

Dixon's has had it's share of excitement, such as in 1997 when a car crashed into the storefront at 325 N Main, shortly after moving into the building.

In 1967, a fire started in the Variety Store next door. Lance, the owner today, was only in fourth grade. Though the store was burned to the ground, Dixon's came back stronger and better than ever, as seen in this lighthearted newspaper clipping.
